ENDANGERED LANGUAGE.
The playwright Julie Bokowiec explores some of the underlying themes connected with the loss of language, with social and political shifts and the potential future effects of climate change, in the script of The Last Cuckoo.
From historical acts of cultural genocide: libricide – to forms of verbal imperialism whereby language is invented in order to obscure meaning, to the significance of the personal journal/memory archive. Julie will discuss how meaning is lost when words are detached from their reference points in nature and experience and how the projected effects of rapid climate change not only threatens habitats and biodiversity, but also language, meaning and culture. The session will close with an examination of the ethics of ‘who speaks’ and ‘what is recorded’ both in terms of theatre practice and in the light of a number of current global archiving projects such as UNESCO’s Intangible Culture project, the World Oral Literature project, the British Library’s TIMELINES archive, along side grass-roots community publishing projects.
This session will be of particular interest to academics, theatre specialists and practitioners.
